This isn’t going to go over well…

You Should Be An Atheist

So it’s not really a religion. But that’s the whole point.

You don’t buy into the whole God thing… or you just don’t care.

You may feel very alone in a world full of religious people.

But just remember, atheism has a long and rich intellectual history.

  1. Atheism is just religious people’s way of labeling those who don’t believe as they do. It’s the same as calling someone an Anti-Loch-Nesser or a Santaisn’t. Just define yourself as you see fit (or don’t, it’s your call) but don’t cower into other people’s labels.

  2. Brian – religious people can be boneheaded and come up with some dumb lables but I don’t think Atheism is one of them. Generally that is a badge of honor worn by those who proclaim to be atheistic – it is their label not one put on them.

  3. As an atheist I’m proud to call myself such. By definition it means that I don’t believe in any theism, or I have a lack of belief in religious dogma. From my experience the religious folk have labeled me with things that are much less flattering than atheist.

  4. Why? I’m an Atheist by their definition, but only as defined by them. Their religion is the most important thing to them and by contrast you are saying that your lack of belief is what the most important thing to you is. If anything, I would rather consider myself post-theological because I’m just completely over having to deal with superstitions and the people who believe in them. It is the last thing on my mind and I do not wish to have people attempt to define me on such a limiting term.

It’s like me meeting someone who’s life revolves around the myth of Bigfoot and then allowing them to give me a title so that can understand who I am in reference to them. Now I may take said title and wear it as a proud non-believer in Bigfoot, but that is not who I am – no more then I am an Atheist. So if you want to be proud and wear your badge of honor, go right ahead. But you are only validating their beliefs through accepting that their argument is essential for everyone.
