Thoughts on 2007 - Pt. 2

Today my reflection on a big news story from last year brings me to… Michael Vick.

My thoughts on this story are concise.

How on earth do you excuse or even begin to justify Vick’s involvement in dogfighting? There have been a number of high profile black football players, (so called) civil rights leaders and others speak up to offer a reason that Vick was involved in this. The excuses ran the gamut.

  • He can’t help his upbringing
  • It was the company he kept
  • Folks don’t understand the ’sport’
  • Its a part of ‘black’ culture

I’m calling bullshit on all of those, and most of the other asinine defenses he and his ‘friends’ offered. In the interest of full disclosure, I have never been a Vick fan. There was just something about him that reminded me of the juvenile delinquents that were populating the roster of the Jailblazers (they’re all gone now). He wasn’t someone that I wanted my kids to look up to as anything but a bad example.

Chances are, he will finish his jail sentence, then sign on with some NFL team as a backup QB. I pity the team that is desperate enough to fill the seats for a couple games and to sell a few jerseys to sign this waste of talent.

  1. Nice post Jhon…
hey i love the way you call “bullshit” with those things..

but i don’t agree when you call it “black” culture..
    let’s call it “dark” culture…

but this is still a very nice thought..

    congrats :)

  2. Thanks for taking the time to comment, I appreciate your thoughts.

I use the term ‘black culture’ because that is the phrase I heard the people of that culture use to describe it. One of the victims of the Politically Correct ‘culture’ is the random designation of which words are offensive. I certainly hope that I didn’t offend you.
